There are several different requirements for the

    barrier

planks associated with post and plank systems. The following explains the requirements and how they may be met using

    barrier

planks which are red and white and manufactured in fully retro-reflective materials. Barrier planks are required to carry out three functions

    medical

    :- As a traffic

    barrier

. When a traffic lane is closed for works to take place, the regulations require this to be done with a retro-reflective red and white

    barrier

plank placed across the lane. As a pedestrian

    barrier

. Pedestrians must be separated from the works by a

    barrier

    which

    medical

is conspicuous and mounted as part of a portable fencing system. Pedestrian

    barrier

planks may be of several different contrasting colours; yellow, white or orange colours are best detected by partially sighted people, but red and white is one of the acceptable combinations. All

    barrier

s facing vehicular traffic should be

    medical

of the fully retro-reflective red and white form. Red and white

    barrier

planks do not have to be used for pedestrian

    barrier

s or tapping rails but, if they are, they must be retro-reflective .There are other points to note about the use of

    barrier

planks in portable fencing systems: The

    medical

    traffic

    barrier

is not needed if the works are protected by a conspicuous vehicle. Pedestrian

    barrier

systems must be rigid enough to guard pedestrians from traffic, excavations, plant or materials. They must be placed with sufficient clearance to prevent pedestrians falling into the excavation and, when placed to create a

    medical

temporary footway in the carriageway parallel to the traffic stream, must be protected by a row of traffic cones between the

    barrier

and the traffic stream. Where long excavations are sited in situations where pedestrians are not expected to cross from the opposite side,

    barrier

s on the traffic stream side

    medical

of the works area do not need the tapping rail. In these circumstances, on an unrestricted road, the

    barrier

on the traffic stream side can be replaced with an additional row of cones.Use pedestrian

    barrier

s to mark out any temporary footway. You must always use a rigid

    barrier

    to protect

    medical

pedestrians from traffic, excavations, plant or materials.
