than their less successful rivals, according Design Council research. The 2002 National Survey of small, medium and large businesses across the UK shows a clear link between how businesses performed over the previous 12 months and the role

, innovation and creativity were 'integral to the firm's operation. In sharp contrast, 67% of companies which hadn't grown in the previous year hadn't conducted any

s or services. The research also reveals that more medium-sized and small businesses are taking

seriously - three-quarters of firms employing 50 to 249 people and 72% of small businesses (20-49 employees) saw

2001. But among big businesses employing more than 250 people, the number taking this view of

has declined from 75% in 2001 to 67% in 2002. And there's evidence that many businesses don't realise the full extent of
